The Canadian Coast Guard Marine Communications and Traffic Services program is responsible for the Internet Innav website. It provides access to information on commercial marine traffic in selected Canadian waters.



Information groups available on this site are:

For the Eastern and Northern Canada:

    Site access

    Access to this site is currently free and is restricted to the Canadian Maritime Industry. It is necessary to request a user account.

    Access control means that the Canadian Coast Guard is able to personalize each user account.

    A validation is made to allow only authorized users access to the Internet Innav site. A computer identification program is used to complete this process.

    An account can be obtained by completing the "subscription request" with the necessary information. Normally, a request or a change in access control will be processed within 5 working days.

    Information available on this site

    The information is subdivided into two zones:
    • Eastern and Northern Canada
    • Western Canada
    Eastern and Northern Canada

    The Eastern and Northern Canada zones include:

    • The Great Lakes;
    • The St-Lawrence Seaway;
    • The St-Lawrence River;
    • The Gulf of St-Lawrence;
    • The Arctic Ocean;
    • A portion of the Atlantic Ocean.

    Information is updated every 5 minutes. It concerns mainly the movement of vessels in the bodies of water covered by MCTS centres that operate the Innav system.

    Information from Eastern and Northern Canada include the following:

    • Estimated time of departure of a vessel;
    • Estimated time of passing a pilot boarding station;
    • A vessel's current position;
    • A vessel's destination and estimated time of arrival;
    • Estimated time of passing mandatory reporting points;
    • A vessel's direction and movement status;
    • Traffic historical data;
    • History of actual time of arrival and departure for a specific vessel at a port;
    • A vessel's tombstone (length, type, flag, etc.).

    Information available for Eastern and Northern Canada is facilitated and optimized by the following features:

    • Search for a given vessel;
    • Filter a vessel list by a specific geographic zone, or a given destination;
    • Display vessels on an electronic chart.
    Western Canada

    The Western Canada zone includes :

    • Coastal waters of British Colombia;
    • A portion of the Pacific Ocean.

    Information is updated every five minutes. It contains the movement of vessels in the bodies of water covered by the VTOSS system.

    Information from Western Canada contains the following:

    • Vessel name, call sign and Lloyds number;
    • Type and nationality of a vessel;
    • Position source;
    • A vessel's position, updated regularly;
    • The traffic zone;
    • A vessel's direction and speed;
    • A vessel's departure and destination;
    • A tug-tow description.

    Information for Western Canada is facilitated and optimized by the following features:

    • Search for a given vessel;
    • Display vessels on an electronic chart.
    The available information is subdivided into ten main pages :

    The Eastern and Northern Canada Active Traffic Page
    The Eastern and Northern Canada Active traffic page allows an on-line consultation of active traffic in Eastern Canada.
    Vessels can be filtered to obtain a list in a given geographic zone.
    A user can search for a given vessel.
    A cartographic display of vessel’s position, a detailed trip itinerary, a detailed movement report and tombstone information (length, etc.) can be obtained.

    The Eastern and Northern Canada Traffic Historical Data Page

    Eastern Canada traffic historical data is available from June 2002 onwards in groupings of three months. To obtain an event list for a vessel the following criteria can be selected:

    • A specific geographical zone;
    • A specific event type;
    • A specific period of time.

    The Eastern and Northern Canada Past Departures and Arrivals Page
    The Eastern and Northern Canada Past Departures and Arrivals page gives access to the departures and the arrivals of vessels. The user can define the information according to a region and a period of time. The available information is for the last three months.
    For a vessel, it is possible to obtain the cartographic display of its position, a detailed movement report and the tombstone information (length, etc.).

    Harbour authorities will find this tool useful.

    Active Traffic Related to A Pilotage Request in Eastern Canada
    The Active Traffic page gives access to pilotage requests for a given zone and can include the estimated time of arrival at a pilot station.
    For a vessel, the cartographic display of its position, a detailed trip itinerary, a detailed movement report and the tombstone information (length, etc.) can be obtained.

    The Western Canada Active Traffic Page
    The Western Canada Active Traffic page allows on-line consultation of the information concerning the active traffic in Western Canada.
    The user can search any chosen field.
    For a vessel, the cartographic display of its position can be obtained.

    The Trip Detailed Itinerary Page
    The Detailed Trip Itinerary page shows the actual and expected events of a vessel’s current trip which includes the departure, calling-in points and the destination.

    The Detailed Movement Report Page
    From the Detailed Movement Report Page, the user can obtain general information of a vessel for its current trip.
    The current trip contains the departure, the current position, the next position, the destination and any particular situations that have occurred during the trip.

    The Vessel Tombstone Page
    The vessel tombstone contains the identification data, the physical information (the structure), characteristics (particularities) and electronic equipment.

    The Cartographic Display of Vessel's Position
    The cartographic display shows the position of a vessel on an adjustable electronic card.
    Unlike the other pages which present the last reported position, this page displays real time positions. The real time position can be: simulated position, a radar position or a GPS position. For Eastern Canada, all surrounding vessels are also displayed.

    Find a Location
    The feature "Find a Location" displays the boundaries of a location on an adjustable electronic card. The location coordinates come from information provided by MCTS (Marine Communications and Traffic Services) Officers.
    A search can be done either by location type or name.
